A week in Generative AI: Character.ai, Gemini & Roblox
News for the week ending 17th September 2023
A mixed week for news, and fewer long reads than I’m normally able to share. I highly recommend the article form the FT though - it’s an impressive explanation of how LLMs work, best I’ve seen.
AI app Character.ai is catching up to ChatGPT in the US
I’ve been keeping an eye on Character.ai for some time, due to the sheer amount of time its users spend on the site/app - an average of 30mins! Good to see this translating through into audience growth now. This is definitely going to be a big competitor for 18-24 year old eye balls next year.
Google Gemini Poised to Take On AI Titans OpenAI and Microsoft
Great to hear that testing has started on Gemini - I’m excited about the release as I think it’s going to move the generative AI game on again. Exciting times ahead!
Roblox’s new AI chatbot will help you build virtual worlds
So this is what the next generation of creators are going to be growing up with - the ability to create anything from their imagination with a series of natural language prompts, in real time. This is what the metaverse will be, not just some fancy headset.
Tech Executives Warn Of AI Dangers And ‘Superintelligence’ In Closed-Door Meeting
A shame to see this was behind doors, and it sounds like the same conversation was had between tech leaders and US government. As the article states, the US is behind Europe in making progress on regulatory policies. They need less talk and more action if they want to be a leader in the responsible use of AI.
Apple Spending Millions of Dollars a Day on Conversational AI
No surprises here. With a few exceptions Apple is normally a follower, not a leader on new technologies, but when they do enter a market they usually raise the bar. It will be really interesting to see where this ends up as I expect it to be way more ambitious and capable than the article makes it out to be - multi-step tasks doesn’t sound all that exciting!
