A week in Generative AI: Altman, Brockman & OpenAI
News for the week ending 19th November 2023
Putting OpenAI’s self-implosion to one side, this week has seen delays from Google on Gemini, more research being released showing the impact of generative aI in the workplace and the most incredible application of the technology that I’ve seen in medicine to date.
Enjoy!
Sam Altman & Greg Brockman exit OpenAI
Wow 🤯. Nobody saw this coming and still very little is known about why Sam Altman was fired from OpenAI beyond the statement the board released. You can find my hot-take on what happened on LinkedIn, link below.
It already looks increasingly likely that Sam Altman and Greg Brockman will return to OpenAI and by the time this newsletter hits your inboxes I’m sure there will be more developments. It’s been an interesting weekend to say the least!
Google Delays Release of Gemini AI That Aims to Compete With OpenAI
Not only is this a delay, but all the interesting features that would have enabled Gemini to take the generative AI game up another level have been removed from v1.0. These are features such as it’s ability to perform more strategic decisions making and longer term planning. v1.0 will also only be text based with multi-modality coming later in 2024.
This reinforces how powerful multi-modal GPT-4 Turbo is and the lead OpenAI has on the industry. It might not be possible for even Google to catch-up with them now.
Study shows that ChatGPT boosts low-performing employees the most
Another corroboration of the great HBR/BCG research from a couple of months back that generative AI can be a great skills-enhancer, levelling the playing field for knowledge work.
AI could predict heart attack risk up to 10 years in the future
This is some incredible research and if it leads to doctors altering the care plans of 45% of potential cardiac patients, leading to saving their lives that is a huge step forward in medicine.
